Ira S. Nigen Summer Internship

The Carefree Foundation is offering the opportunity to work as an intern in the Washington, DC area. The individual selected will have the opportunity to work as a project assistant in all areas of the foundation. Some of the duties will include:

  • Planning and participation in all projects outlined on this website including Project African Vision, Project Pooches for People, Project Clinic Restoration, and Project Surgery in Peru which aims to provide cataract surgery for children in Ethiopia
  • Working with local free clinics to advance Project Clinic Restoration which aims to renovate free clinics in the District of Columbia
  • Working with national chapters to help establish and progress chaptership
  • Helping to coordinate runners for the 2005 Marine Corps Marathon and 8K run fundraiser
  • Researching public health topics
  • Learning about international medicine, not-for-profit organizations and public health initiatives
  • Help maintain our office in Chevy Chase, MD (4 blocks outside Washington, D.C.)

Applicants should have a strong interest in international medicine or public health. No prior experience is necessary though past experience will be considered in picking a candidate. Candidates must be highly motivated, attentive to detail, and have excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Length of internship: 8+ weeks

Salary: $700/month

Hours: Generally flexible (can work from home and need not live in the Washington, D.C. area) but interns are expected to work an average of 40 hours per week. This will include a mandatory meeting with the Executive Director and/or a member of the board of directors 3-4 times/week and occasional relevant committee meetings in the evenings (rarely on weekends).
